Some time after Talavera, Girdwood met the corrupt Sir Henry Simmerson who agreed that he was unfairly dismissed and offered to buy Girdwood the lieutenant colonelcy of the South Essex Regiment's Second Battalion, based in Chelmsford, in exchange for Girdwood overseeing Simmerson's "crimping " scheme - selling recruits to other regiments. The scheme goes well enough that Simmerson decides to betroth Girdwood to his niece, Jane Gibbons . By 1813, Major Richard Sharpe of the First Battalion needs new recruits and returns to Chelmsford looking for the Second Battalion.
