The novel spans a total of 126 chapters and was written between 1966 and February 1969. The plot is based on a pair of twins brothers who are separated from each other at birth and raised under different circumstances, which account for the difference in their personalities. The twins first see each other as enemies but they gradually become friends and eventually acknowledge each other as brothers. Jiang Feng, the "most handsome man on Earth" and Yan Nantian, the "best divine swordsman on Earth," become sworn brothers. Jiang injures himself during a misadventure and is rescued by the sisters Yao Yue and Lian Xing, who are the young mistresses of Yihua Palace. Yao and Lian fall in love with the flirtatious Jiang Feng and entrust him with all the protection and love they have. However, Jiang Feng does not like them at all, despite their flawless beauty, as they appear too unrealistic and elitist for him. Jiang falls in love with the slave girl Hua Yuenu instead, and soon Hua becomes pregnant with Jiang's child. Jiang Feng and Hua Yuenu attempt to escape from the palace to elope but their romantic relationship does not last for long as the sisters track them down. Hua Yuenu gives birth to a pair of twin baby boys and she dies together with Jiang Feng.
