The Writers' Conference

Marian D. Schwartz
4.9/5 (15229 ratings)
Description:An alternate cover edition can be found here. When Laura Belmont finishes writing her first novel, fulfilling a promise she had once made to herself, she discovers that it is extraordinarily difficult to get an agent to represent her. She is competing with thousands of people who are writing books. At the suggestion of her best friend, Laura enrolls in The Clymer Workshop, one of the oldest writers= conferences in the country, where she hopes to make a connection with a writer on the staff or a literary agent who will help her get published. Over two hundred people arrive to attend the conference, many of them with the same idea: to find the key to getting published. The campus is in an isolated, unspoiled setting in Cattaraugus County in Western New York. What occurs in this beautiful setting, however, is anything but tranquil. A stream acidly named Barrier Creek by a disgruntled participant neatly separates the residences of the published writers from the unpublished writers. Michael Pierce and Eric Nettles, the two star fiction writers on the staff, battle over whether plots are still necessary or no longer relevant, with Pierce's beautiful wife Leila as the prize. But Leila, who finally understands that her husband=s work is more important to him than she is, has her own agenda. Some staff writers fear public embarrassment because they don't have new work to present at their obligatory readings. A powerful critic on the staff whom Laura finds repulsive offers to help her in return for sex, and threatens her if she refuses. Doug Webb, a brilliant young poet who is a manic-depressive on a high, is the only one at the conference who is willing to speak out and question what is happening.Intensity builds with each day as fiction writers and poets who attend the workshops hope to learn how to get published successfully and how to get literary agents to represent them. As the end of the conference approaches and desperation grows so strong it becomes almost palpable, the anxiety Laura witnesses leads her to the decision that she will not write another book. Then something extraordinary happens that makes her change her mind.We have made it easy for you to find a PDF Ebooks without any digging.
