Mazamas Portland
4.9/5 (32504 ratings)
Description:Excerpt from Mazama, 1897, Vol. 1: A Record of Mountaineering in the Pacific Northwest; Crater Lake Number; Number 2 Crater Lake is situated on the summit of the Cascade Range in southern Oregon, about sixty-five miles north of the California boun dary, and some twenty-two miles northwest of the now abandoned Fort Klamath. Its geographical location is a little southwest of the intersection of the forty-third parallel, north latitude, and the one hundred and twenty-second meridian, west longitude. The old mili tary road leading from Jacksonville to Fort Klamath leads within about three miles of the Lake, and a passable mountain road leads from it up the steep slope of Mount Mazama to the very rim of the Lake. The most favorable time for visiting the Lake is in July, August and September. Before the first of July snow may still make the roads impassable in some places as one gets near the Lake; and after the middle of October, at the latest, there is danger of snow storms coming on which might quite blockade the visitor.fim H.
